Happy 1 Month Mr. James!

Hello Everyone,

This past Tuesday, March 9th marked 1 month since baby James was born. Needless to say it has been an interesting month. Like every first time parents, mommy and daddy are learning how to be mommy and daddy. You only wish these kids came with a set of instructions. In all seriousness, James is good baby. Like all babies, he is still figuring out the whole night and day thing, but he only really fusses when he is hungry...and he is hungry a lot. One thing he is real good at is peeing as soon as the diaper comes off. He must think he is a fireman or something. He "anointed" dad into father hood by hitting me in the face during a diaper change at 3 am one morning shortly after we arrived home from the hospital.

He is a strong little guy. His pediatrician says he has excellent muscle tone and control. She also said his facial and oral motor skills are well developed. She encouraged us to get down on our hands and knees around the house and start baby proofing now because she thinks he will be mobile sooner rather than later.

We have found that gently bouncing him in an upright, almost sitting position will calm him whenever he is fussy. Beth and I find this interesting because this motion mimics the motion and action of the "Johnny Jump-Up" which I so dearly loved when I was a baby. We did receive a JJU at the shower and we plan on putting him in it as soon as he is old enough.

Here are a few things going on with the James man this month:

  • Following his weight loss during the first week of life, he should be putting on weight at 1/2 to 1 ounce per day
  • Studies show that even at a month babies have the instinct to walk. They say that if you hold them upright and support their body while their feet are on a solid surface it will appear as if the baby is trying to take a few steps
  • Babies actually begin to learn their native language in the womb
  • Infants are naturally drawn to human faces. Due to their immature eye sight they can only focus on objects 8 to 12 inches from their face. They also prefer high contrast objects and strong geometric shapes
  • Babies eyes tend to cross when they are focusing on something

Thank you all for stopping by. Keep checking back for more news and updates. Have a great weekend!
