Happy 1 Month Mr. James!

Hello Everyone,

This past Tuesday, March 9th marked 1 month since baby James was born. Needless to say it has been an interesting month. Like every first time parents, mommy and daddy are learning how to be mommy and daddy. You only wish these kids came with a set of instructions. In all seriousness, James is good baby. Like all babies, he is still figuring out the whole night and day thing, but he only really fusses when he is hungry...and he is hungry a lot. One thing he is real good at is peeing as soon as the diaper comes off. He must think he is a fireman or something. He "anointed" dad into father hood by hitting me in the face during a diaper change at 3 am one morning shortly after we arrived home from the hospital.

He is a strong little guy. His pediatrician says he has excellent muscle tone and control. She also said his facial and oral motor skills are well developed. She encouraged us to get down on our hands and knees around the house and start baby proofing now because she thinks he will be mobile sooner rather than later.

We have found that gently bouncing him in an upright, almost sitting position will calm him whenever he is fussy. Beth and I find this interesting because this motion mimics the motion and action of the "Johnny Jump-Up" which I so dearly loved when I was a baby. We did receive a JJU at the shower and we plan on putting him in it as soon as he is old enough.

Here are a few things going on with the James man this month:

  • Following his weight loss during the first week of life, he should be putting on weight at 1/2 to 1 ounce per day
  • Studies show that even at a month babies have the instinct to walk. They say that if you hold them upright and support their body while their feet are on a solid surface it will appear as if the baby is trying to take a few steps
  • Babies actually begin to learn their native language in the womb
  • Infants are naturally drawn to human faces. Due to their immature eye sight they can only focus on objects 8 to 12 inches from their face. They also prefer high contrast objects and strong geometric shapes
  • Babies eyes tend to cross when they are focusing on something

Thank you all for stopping by. Keep checking back for more news and updates. Have a great weekend!

OMG 36 Weeks aka The 9th and Final Month!!!

Hello Everyone,

I would like to welcome you all to the final round, or as we like to call it "The Lightening Round". Get it? Anyway, moving along. First off, Beth and I would like to offer a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who attended the baby shower. Thanks to all of you, we now have everything we need for the little one and then some. A special thanks to Aunty Sarah (Brown), Nana Hefner, and Great Grandma Kay (Trump) for throwing such a wonderful baby shower. After doing some rough calculations, I determined that our diaper yield from said shower was approximately 1,200 diapers (saying yyyaaaayyy in a nerdy voice as I type this sentence). That is absolutely amazing! I thought we literally hit the diaper jackpot. Of course my mouth hit the floor when I realized that may only last us 4 months or so after taking into account the average 8-10 diaper changes per day. Beth and I finally finished our last load of baby clothes last night and were able put everything away in a nice organized fashion (yeah, we'll see how long that lasts after he's born). The nursery looks fantastic by the way (pictures will soon follow). Basically, because of the shower and everyone's generosity, we are as prepared as we possibly can be.

While the women were off having fun, I celebrated the only way I knew how...with a Man Shower of course. Me and my crew took a little trip up to The Shoreline Brewery in Michigan City Indiana. We ate, we drank, we laughed, and we smoked "It's A Boy" cigars. What more could an expectant father ask for on the day of the baby shower. Plus, I picked up a bottle of "Lost Sailor" bourbon barrel aged imperial stout which will be opened only to celebrate the birth of my first son. Here's to you _____ (fill in the blank if you know it).

Beth and baby are doing great. The little one is still passing all of his tests with flying colors. We know, as absolute truth, that he is undeniably a boy after seeing his boy parts numerous times during our many ultrasounds. This Friday will be the last biophysical profile ultrasound where we will find out his approximate weight. The average weight at this point in gestation is about 6.5 lbs. I will venture a guess that he is between 7 and 7.5 lbs. since he has been above the curve every time so far. He is also in the head down position (which is where we want him to be), but he has yet to drop (lightening, see joke above). Beth has said numerous times that she has had a wonderful pregnancy and that she will miss feeling him move around in her belly. With that said, we are so ready for you buddy. We can't wait to meet you and hold you in our arms for the first time.

Here are a few things going on with the little man right now...

  • He will continue to gain approximately 1/2 lb per week up until delivery (beefcake)
  • He should have about 15% body fat when he is born to help insulate his body after leaving his nice temperature controlled studio apartment
  • When he is awake his eyes are open and he closes his eyes during nappy time
  • All of his systems are fully developed except for his digestive system which will develop over the first year of his life while he ingests food and well, you know the rest
  • He is responsive to light, sound, and pressure...in fact, Beth and I play a little poke game with him every now and again. We poke what seems to be his feet and he kicks back
  • By now, he should be at his birth length...I guessed he will be 21 inches long at birth

Thank you all for stopping by again and supporting us. Keep checking back for an update about the finished nursery. Have a great day!

33 WEEKS!!!

Hi Everybody!

Just a quick little update. We had our biophysical profile ultrasound and full anatomy ultrasound on Thursday of last week. Baby Boy Lacny is doing very well! We found out that our little boy is already 5 lbs give or take 12 ounces...WOW! That means he could almost be 6 lbs already with a little less than 7 weeks to go. On average, babies tend to double in weight in between now and 40 weeks. Therefore, our little one could, quite possibly, be a 10 lb happy, healthy baby boy.

Here are just a few things going on with our little one this week...

  • His lungs are almost completely mature, meaning that if he was born this week (lets hope he waits a bit longer) he would be good and healthy with only a little help from the NICU
  • He is very good at detecting light now and can tell the difference between day and night. His pupils will dilate and constrict in response to low-light and bright conditions
  • He will continue to pack on the poundage at a rate of 1/2 lb per week
  • Due to all the fat deposits now formed (and continuing to form), his skin is becoming less and less translucent and more opaque

Thanks everyone. Keep checking back for more updates.

Happy New Year!
